Professor Peter O’Brien

Professor Peter O’Brien received his PhD in physics from University College Cork (Ireland) in 1999. He was a postdoctoral scholar at the California Institute of Technology (US) and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (US). In 2006, he founded Epi-Light Ltd. – a photonics company developing specialty optical systems for medical device and bio-imaging applications – selling the company in 2009, and returning to Tyndall to establish an advanced photonic packaging and integration group. Today, the group has grown to 20 researchers, and is involved in a wide range of academic and industry-funded projects, with a special focus on packaging and integration for silicon-photonics devices. Prof. O’Brien works to develop photonic packaging standards and to support photonic-packaging for the ePIXfab and EuroPractice silicon-photonic foundries.

He has also worked as a technical consultant for a number of international biotech and pharmaceutical companies. In these roles, he applied his knowledge of photonics and optics to determine solutions for manufacturing and diagnostic related problems. Dr O’Brien also worked for a number of years for a US multinational (General Instrument, Power Semiconductor Division), where he was responsible for manufacture of a range of Silicon IC devices. Dr. O’Brien has a PhD in Physics and Masters in Engineering from University College Cork and a degree in Physics from Trinity College Dublin. He has also been a visiting researcher at University of California at Santa Barbara, University of Marburg (Germany) and Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Electronique et de Radioélectricité de Grenoble (France).

Biography

Dr. Peter O’Brien obtained his PhD in Physics from University College Cork in 1999. He has a Masters in Electronic Engineering and Degree in Physics from Trinity College Dublin. He was a postdoctoral scholar at the California Institute of Technology and research scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena (Micro Devices Laboratory) where he worked on the development of millimetre wave devices for remote sensing applications. Dr O’Brien co-founded one (Biosensia) and founded a second company (Epi-Light). His second company, Epi-Light limited, developed speciality photonic systems for medical device and pharmaceutical applications. He successfully sold the company in 2009 and returned to the Tyndall National Institute to establish a research activity in advanced photonic packaging. Dr O’Brien is now head of the Photonics Packaging Group and is involved in a wide range of both academic and industry research projects, across the telecoms and medical device sectors. Dr. O’Brien is also deputy director of the Science Foundation Ireland, Irish Photonic Integration Centre (www.ipic.ie). Dr O'Brien is an Adjunct Professor at the College of Optical Science, University of Arizona, Tucson.
