Fatima obtained her BSc degree in Physics in 1995, MSc in Nonlinear Optics in 1997, and PhD in Optoelectronics in 2000 from PUC-Rio, Brazil, investigating the fundamental nonlinear properties of optical fibres and planar waveguides.
