Tyndall National Institute at University College Cork, invites applications for a PhD in laser development for optical coherence tomography.
Optical coherence tomography is a way to use light to build up 3D images of objects. When the light can penetrate human tissue, this is particularly useful in non-destructive medical imaging, for example in cases where a surgeon needs to know whether a growth is benign or whether it needs to be surgically removed. To get to the growth, an endoscope is used, containing an optical fibre and imaging system. Many growths are benign, and a correct diagnosis means that the patient will not have to go through unnecessary surgery, saving time and inconvenience for both the patient and the surgeon.
This PhD position will develop compact semiconductor laser sources suitable for OCT, which will be used in a new type of multi-functional endoscope. Such lasers will be required to sweep in wavelength over a broad range, at high speed, and be single frequency while sweeping. Several approaches will be taken, for example using our slotted Fabry-Perot lasers, or using tunable filters. Comparisons to other state-of-the-art OCT lasers will be made. Suitable imaging optics for the endoscope will also be designed and tested. After full development of the components, they will be integrated with an endoscope to produce real-time 3D images.
