Training

Training Ireland and Europe’s future photonics research leaders is one of our core activities and one that we are passionate about.

We have over 20 PhDs and Postdocs who join us every year to advance their research skills and prepare themselves for careers with the world’s leading technology companies, in dynamic fast growing start-ups and SMEs, or in leading academic institutions.

We are currently evolving our PhD and Postdoc training into more structured programmes to enhance the quality of the training experience and to strengthen the development of non-research skills, such as project management, grant writing and IP commercialisation. As part of this development we recently launched two dedicated training programmes at PhD and Postdoc level:

  • PIADS
  • Sparkle

Bespoke Training Courses

We also have a set of emerging programmes and bespoke trainings for academics and industry-based individuals who would like to learn about the latest developments and scientific techniques. These intense week long training programmes include hands-on activities in our state-of-the-art laboratories and semiconductor fabrication facilities.

Compound Semiconductor Device Fabrication
Course overview: Gain a “big picture” understanding of the steps involved in fabricating and testing of Ridge Laser devices on GaAs substrate. Participants will be familiarised with the state-of-the-art fabrication facilities and equipment available in Tyndall National Institute.
Learning outcomes: Learn fabrication steps of a compound semiconductor device and fabricate a simple light emitting device.
Target audience: This course is suitable for participants with no prior practical experience in working in the field of semiconductor device fabrication who want to gain this specific knowledge to advance their research, as well as experienced participants who want to expand their tool set.
Length: 4.5 days
Further information:
• In-person training at Tyndall National Institute/Cork
• Lab access charges apply
• Module at UCC: https://www.tyndall.ie/module-information

Micro-transfer printing
Course overview: Micro-transfer printing (MTP) is a cutting-edge technology in heterogeneous integration that enables the transfer of microscale structures and devices from one substrate to another with high precision and accuracy. This process involves the use of specialized machinery, mechanisms, and software that are specifically designed for micro-transfer printing.
Learning outcomes: Introduction to machinery, mechanisms, and software exclusively designed for micro-transfer printing. Learn about the diverse range of semiconductor material systems, including GaAs, InP, GaN, and Si, and their application potential.
Target audience: This course is tailored to the needs of graduates and seasoned professionals in both academic and industrial spheres. It presents an opportunity to acquire indispensable proficiencies in the area of micro-transfer printing. While an educational background in science or engineering is very advantageous, this course welcomes individuals from diverse backgrounds who harbor a curiosity for this cutting-edge technology. A fundamental grasp of semiconductor technology is recommended but not obligatory.
Length: 2 days

Photonics Packaging & Integration Technologies
Course overview: Photonic device packaging can account for over 50% of the photonic product manufacturing cost. Therefore, it is vital that industries developing photonic-based products have an understanding of the materials, technologies and processes required to package their photonic devices.
Learning outcomes:
• Perform key photonic packaging processes and use advanced packaging equipment.
• Perform photonic module test, reliability and failure analysis.
• Learn about critical photonic packaging design rules.
• Learn how to manage the photonic product design process and manufacturing ecosystem
Target audience: It is desirable but not essential that course attendees have a basic understanding of photonics. The course is ideally suited to those planning to develop new photonic products, establish in house or outsource packaging development and manufacturing.
Length: 3 days
