Dmitri Papkovsky

Principal Investigator

Dmitri B. Papkovsky graduated Moscow State University in 1982 with an MSc in Chemistry and obtained his PhD degree in 1986 from the Institute of Biochemistry, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow. In 1996 he joined the University College Cork where he is currently Professor at the School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Head of Biophysics and Bioanalysis lab. Prof. Papkovsky is also a founding member and PI of the Irish Photonics Integration Centre (www.ipic.ie), a co-founder of Luxcel Biosciences (www.luxcel.com) and Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. Research interests of Prof. Papkovsky include phosphorescence based probes for sensing and imaging of cell and tissue oxygenation, live FLIM/PLIM microscopy, and their use to study roles of O2 in biological systems, cell metabolism, bioenergetics and common disease states. He is author of 180+ publications in peer-reviewed journals and 15+ patents and patent applications, and has an h-index of 43.

Research Facilities

We have a range of modern and unique spectroscopic and biochemical equipment including:

  • Live-cell confocal FLIM-TCSPC imaging system with ns-ms time resolution (Becker& Hickl – Carl Zeiss)
  • Wide-field camera based FLIM microscope for live cell imaging (Carl Zeiss – LaVision)
  • Two Hypoxia Stations (Coy Scientific) for continuous cell culture and bioassays  under low pO2. Standard tissue culture facility.
  • Multi-label readers: FLUOstar Omega with O2/CO2 control (BMG), Victor (PerkinElmer) – 2.
  • Handheld optical oxygen sensors: OpTech Platinum (Mocon) and Firesting (PyroScience).
  • Precision gas mixing and calibration equipment for sensor and application development.
  • UV-VIS and fluorescence specs, Agilent HP1100 Series HPLC system.

We also have access to centralised facilities such as tissue culture room, animal house, fluorescent confocal and two-photon microscopes (Olympus), core equipment within UCC and microfabrication facilities at the Tyndall National Institute. Collaborate with many academic labs and companies worldwide.
