Maria Victoria Fernandez

Research Assistant

Maria Victoria Fernandez is a research assistant within the Biophotonics group at Tyndall National Institute for the project on the potential use of Raman Spectroscopy applied to inflammatory bowel disease for molecular characterisation and development of blood, saliva and intestinal biopsies biomarkers, enabling accurate and non-invasive diagnosis. She is working under the supervision and guidance of Dr. Katarzyna Komolibus, Dr. Rekha Gautam and Prof. Stefan Andersson-Engels.

In 2019, she graduated from medical school in the Italian University Institute of Rosario (IUNIR), Argentina. After graduation she worked for two years in A&E and an intermediate care unit as a physician, while also carrying out clinical research in the hospital. In 2022 she moved to Ireland to obtain an English Certificate and in 2023 was honoured with the Higher Education Authority scholarship from the Government of Ireland for international students to study a master’s degree in Cell and Molecular Biology with Bioinnovation at University College Cork (UCC), during which she significantly enhanced her understanding of biochemistry, analytical research, and laboratory skills, while also sharpening her clinical research expertise. Her master’s research involved the study of coagulation factors as potential promoters of breast cancer and its possible impact on early diagnosis and treatment alternatives.
